In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom found that a mastery learning approach which postulated that students performing in the 50th percentile in a traditional classroom can perform in the 98th percentile with mastery learning plus personalized tutoring. 

According to Bloom, categorizing students as “high” or “low” achievers was almost entirely incorrect, henceforth the “2-Sigma” problem was born. Mastery learning methods suggest that the focus of instruction should be the time required for different students to learn the same material and achieve the same level of mastery. This is very much in contrast with classic models of teaching, which focus more on differences in students’ ability and where all students are given approximately the same amount of time to learn and the same set of instructions.

With artificial intelligence and adaptive technologies enable U12B to remove the “2-Sigma” problem which educators have been waiting for decades. Personalized Mastery learning is now a reality:

Note: The mastery methods suggests that focus of instruction should be the time required for different students to learn the same material and achieve the same level of mastery. This is very much in contrast with traditional classroom, which focus more on differences in students’ ability and where all students are given approximately the same amount of time to learn. Therefore, in a mastery earning environment, the challenge becomes providing enough time and employing instructional strategies so that students will attain mastery.
